Farmers Market Day

On a beautiful Saturday morning, I went on a tour of a few of our local farmer’s markets.

Over the weekend, I visited Burris’, Hazel’s, and Allegri Markets, collecting various in-season fruits, and produce. I haven’t made a leisurely visit to a market in quite some time, and I realized this weekend, how very much I enjoy it. It’s one of the many good things that has changed in my lifestyle, because of the virus.

When I stepped into each building, I was able to enjoy the wind blowing and the mild weather that we’ve been having. It’s rare that the weather is still bearable this time of year, in lower Alabama, and right now, it’s lovely. I browsed the aisles, stopping to breathe in the grassy aroma of fresh peaches. I admired the leathery skin of bright red tomatoes, chose a forest green head of lettuce, and felt happier, gazing at hundreds of sunny yellow lemons. The staff at each loaction were kind and cheerful. Most of them, were young high school students, probably enjoying staying busy and employed. I want to point that out, because the reason I started this blog was to spotlight our local small business heroes… Those who are still hiring, and still providing jobs, are more important to our community, and our economy than we realize.

So, on your way home today, stop by your local market. Enjoy the fruits of your neighbor’s labor, and support those who are keeping us fed. What an amazing way, to invest in our community!

Taco Mama

Let me just say… I love Taco Mama. I really, really do.

When I think about Taco Mama, the oh-so-thin crispy chips, and the smoky salsa… I get this warm, fuzzy feeling inside. We were wilting from the Covid-19 separation, but, just as all looked bleak and queso-less, a light shone out through the tempestuous dark.

You can now order your, TACO / NACHO BAR TO-GO!!!!

So, for Mama’s Day, we ordered a giant box of all that Taco Mama is offering, and all was good and right in the world. Ready in minutes, and just as delicious as always. I pulled into the parking lot, opened the back of my vehicle, and the kind staff carried out my very own box of happiness, and loaded it for me! Perfect for small gatherings, graduation parties, dinner with friends, or to send a friend who needs a break from cooking. This is a great time to show some love to your pal in the education or healthcare industry.

Feast your eyes on this delightful spread, and then call them for your next 6-foot apart porch party, amigo!

Mo’Bay Beignet Co.

One of the things I am most looking forward to, after the quarantine ends, is visiting Mo’Bay Beignet Co.

I can’t wait for the pleasure of partaking in their famed treats which, by the way, they offer paired with ridiculously delightful sauces… But, before I get to visit again in person, I’ve gotten to experience their signature coffee with chicory.

During these weeks of quarantine, the kind owner has been offering beignet, and coffee kits, delivered to your front door.

I ordered mine online, and the next day, there was a brightly wrapped bag of coffee on my doorstep.

Make sure you give them a “like” & “follow”, they’ve quickly become one of my favorite businesses in Mobile, because of how they treat their people. We are privileged to have these folks, in our Port City.

Here’s to hoping we will all be covered in powdered sugar again, soon.

Mobile’s Maple Street Biscuit Co.

Well, ladies and gents, we are smack in the middle of the Great 2020 Covid-19 Quarantine, and yours truly forgot to buy proseco!! IDIOT.

Well, take courage, faint hearted shelter-er… MAPLE STREET BISCUIT CO. to the rescue! This lovely Sunday morning, when they posted they were selling Mimosa Kits, with freshly squeezed orange juice, I ventured out. Boy, was it worth it! I found myself driving home, listening to Van Morrison, thinking, “Well, this isn’t so bad… I could stay home for weeks with provisions like these… golly, I’m pretty content.”

In the heart of Springhill, you’ll find the beautiful location of Maple Street Biscuit. The quintessential oak lined street of Old Shell Road, welcomes you into its modern facility. These people not only have impeccable food, but they are heavily involved in the community. They hosted a small local church, for a time.

I went home and enjoyed my spoils, in the lovliest, one of a kind, vintage bar set (which can be found in The Spectre Shelf).

Cheers to Sundays!
